Okay…a little back story. I’m a city girl. I was born and raised in the city. I moved to the country to go to college and met my husband. He grew up in the country. Don’t get me wrong….I love the country. But as they say, you can take the girl out of the city, but not the city out of the girl. We live in the country now and we have a whole acre. Lots and lots of room for our kids to run and play. Plus, we live really close to a small city, so to me it’s the best of both worlds. I get the openness of the country with the convenience of a city a short drive away. So far, it’s been the perfect arrangement.
Life is so interesting. There are things I’ve had the chance to learn about and experience that I never in my life thought I would. Well, take this for example. Meet our new pets:
If you’re a city girl like me and can’t tell what they are, no worries. These are baby chickens. I have no idea what kind (breed?) they are. My husband is a school counselor and the 2nd grade at his school hatched them. They’re only a week old and right now, they are so cute! We let our two older kids each name one.
This is Sonic Fast Hedgehog. We’re calling him Sonic for short.
And this is Sparkles.
So far, Sparkles is my favorite. It’s okay to pick favorite chickens, you know. I don’t think the other one will get her feelings hurt. Sparkles has quite the personality. She sleeps on her side with her legs stretched out. And she is the least afraid of being held. Sonic is a little bit more skeptical of this whole situation. I don’t blame her!
Right now I’m very excited/nervous about this new venture. I’m just hoping they survive the 2-year old (who lovingly calls them “Chitens”) and our cat. We’re keeping them inside to start with until they get older and we can get them a proper chicken coop.
In the meantime, I’ve been studying up. I found this great website and ordered this book. Does anyone else raise backyard chickens? Or, know what breed mine are by chance?
