Watercolor Easter Eggs

April 5, 2012 by Shatzi

The kids have been on Spring Break all week. We’ve been having lots of fun playing. Today, we decided to dye Easter eggs.

For as long as I can remember, I have dyed Easter Eggs with food coloring. It’s simple, cheap, and works tons better than the box dye. If you don’t already know how to do it, here’s how:

Get some boiled eggs, vinegar and food coloring. I used both McCormick and AmeriColor gel food coloring and they both worked incredibly well.
Put about 3/4 c boiling water plus 1 Tbsp. vinegar in each color cup. Then, add as much food coloring as you want. I added 10ish drops of the McCormick food coloring and a small squirt of the AmeriColor gel.

Then, dip away!

The eggs dye really fast. Most colors took less than a minute to color the eggs.
The kids had fun experimenting with different color mixing. If you look very closely you can see the different color swirls in the eggs:

We decided to try painting on the eggs with our paint pens. They are one of the kid’s favorite art supplies. They are watercolor paints put in a pen. We bought them for the kids for Christmas. You can find them at Wal-Mart. The colors are a lot more intense than regular water colors. Plus you don’t have to worry about a cup of paint water tipping over.

I was actually really surprised at how cool they turned out:

The colors painted on the eggs so well, that we even got the yellow to paint over a dark blue egg:

It turned out to be a fun afternoon art project!

really cute idea! thanks for sharing! I found it the day after Easter this year, so I’ll have to do it next year, but I’m going to get those paints today if I can – thanks for the tip on those too!
