Texas, the Musical Drama

During our vacation, we sort of had three different trips combined into one.

Our first stop was Bear Lake, Utah. We spent a few days there.

After that we headed south to Albuquerque, New Mexico. That’s where I grew up. We go there almost every year. I’ll post a little more about that later.

Finally, we ended our trip in the Texas Panhandle to visit some friends. I’ve been to Texas before when I was a teenager. My husband had never been. But, it was the first time going to the Panhandle for both of us, so we had no idea what to do or expect. Our friends took us to Texas. Not the state, but the show. We loved it! I love to travel and love finding things to put on my travel bucket list. So, I thought I would share it with you just in case you’re a travel lover like me and you ever find yourself in the Texas Panhandle. This show is definitely a must!

Texas, the Musical Drama is performed in the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. If you’ve ever been to the Texas Panhandle, there is one very obvious feature. It is flat. Like flat, flat. I’ve traveled all over the west, but not the Midwest. I’ve never been anywhere that no mountains exist. It was definitely a new experience. So, when I heard that the show was in a canyon, I honestly could not imagine how that was even possible.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is about 25 miles from Amarillo, Texas. And it is gorgeous. From the drive, the canyon just seems to come out of nowhere. One minute you’re driving on a flat road and the next you’re turning into a canyon that is perfectly carved out of the flat terrain.

The show is inside the canyon. If you want, before the show starts they have Chuckwagon BBQ Dinner. We didn’t eat there, so I can’t tell you about the dinner. If we ever go back, I’d love to try the dinner.

When you first arrive, there is an outdoor lobby equipped with spraying misters to keep you cool. They had live music playing and people dancing. It was a fun environment. My kids had an absolute blast.

Once it was time for the show to start, we headed over to the outdoor amphitheater. It was beautiful!

TEXAS is an old west musical about the settling of the Texas Panhandle. The show was wonderfully performed with just the right amount of music and acting. Last summer, we went to Mount Rushmore and attended the night show there. TEXAS was definitely a bigger production!

The show was filled with special effects. There were water effects, fireworks, and lots of fire. My daughter was distraught when she saw this actor on fire. She could not understand for a minute how it could be “pretend”.

My favorite part was when lightening suddenly strikes down the canyon and splits a tree in half. By all accounts I would have sworn it was real lightening!

It was a really fun night! If you ever find yourself in the Texas Panhandle, I highly recommend seeing this show!
