The Easiest Pillowcase EVER!

Today, I’m sharing a fun and easy pillowcase project. Back when I was in college, I decided that I wanted to learn to sew, so I took a beginners sewing class. It was so awesome! I learned so many basic sewing techniques that have been the foundation for learning so much more! One of the first projects we completed was a super simple pillowcase. And it’s sewn perfectly because there are NO raw edges to finish when you’re done.

The technique to make this is really clever. I don’t know who came up with it, but it is pretty darn awesome!
Here’s what you need to make a standard sized pillowcase:

3 different coordinating fabrics. We used fabrics that match the quilt I’m working on for my daughter’s bed.

Main fabric – 27-inches x 41-inches (buy 3/4 yard)
Cuff fabric – 11-inches x 41-inches (buy 1/3 yard)
Accent fabric – 3-inches x 41-inches (buy 1/8 yard)

The first step is to cut the bought fabric to the right dimensions. If you have a rotary cutter and mat, it will make your job a lot faster and easier. When I was in college, I just hand measured and cut everything. So, either way works.

After your fabric is cut, iron the accent piece in half length-wise wrong sides together.

Now, on the longest side, layer the three fabrics right sides up. Start with the cuff piece, add the main piece and finish with the accent piece. The raw edge of the accent piece should match the raw edge of the other fabrics.

With a few pins, pin along the edge to hold those in place.

Now, fold up the main fabric so that it fits inside the cuff fabric.

Then, fold over the cuff fabric to match with the pinned edge.

Pin it really well along the edge.

You’re kind of making a fabric burrito. See?

Sew the raw edge with 1/4” seam allowance.

After it’s sewn, reach in and pull all of the inner fabric out.

Then, press the cuff and accent fabric down.

Now to finish the rest of the pillowcase. It’s finished with French seams, which means all of the seams are encased.

 Pin the pillowcase WRONG sides together and pin.

Sew all around the raw edges with a 1/4” seam allowance.

Turn the pillowcase inside out and press the seams.

Still inside out, stitch along the edges with a 3/8-inch seam allowance.

The inside seams should turn out looking like this:

Turn it inside out, and press. And that’s it! You’re finished!!

Now it’s time to go take a nap.
